Ask your assistant what the water will be like

The Coast Map works inside Claude, ChatGPT and any other assistant that speaks the Model Context Protocol: tide times, slack water, wind and waves, marine warnings and water temperature for your launch, from official sources. One URL, no sign-up, free.

https://coast.cosmicotter.ca/mcp

Connect it

Claude (web, desktop, mobile)

Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector. Name it "Coast Map" and paste the URL above.

ChatGPT

Settings → Apps & Connectors → Advanced, turn on developer mode, then create a connector with the URL above.

Claude Code

One line in a terminal:

claude mcp add --transport http coast-map https://coast.cosmicotter.ca/mcp
Cursor, VS Code and other MCP clients

Add a remote (streamable HTTP) server:

{ "mcpServers": { "coast-map": {
  "url": "https://coast.cosmicotter.ca/mcp" } } }

Menu names in each assistant change from time to time; look for "connectors", "custom connector" or "MCP server".

Then just ask

"I'm launching from Tofino tomorrow morning. When's low tide, and how windy will it be?"
"When is slack water at Active Pass on Saturday?"
"What are the best daylight low tides near Victoria this month for tide pooling?"
"Is there a small craft warning for Johnstone Strait, and how cold is the water?"

Every answer says how fresh its forecast is (as_of). These are predictions for planning, not for navigation: carry charts and check the official forecast and warnings before you go.

The Coast Map Pass

Everything above is free for now. The Coast Map Pass (CA$7 a month or CA$55 a year, no account) is coming: it will add tide and current ranges up to 90 days for assistants, and offline regions in the app for trips with no signal. When it's on sale, your assistant can sell it to you in the chat; if you already have a key, send it as a header:

Authorization: Bearer <your pass key>

JSON API

The same tools as plain HTTPS. The tool list is at /api/v1 and the OpenAPI 3.1 description at /api/v1/openapi.json.

curl "https://coast.cosmicotter.ca/api/v1/tide_times?lat=49.15&lng=-125.9&days=2"

Limits: 120 requests a minute per address (60 for the marine forecast). Kayak outfitters, tour operators and apps that need more can email brendon@cosmicotter.ca.

Questions

Do I need an account or API key?

No. Paste the URL and ask.

Which coasts does it cover?

Official tide predictions for Canada, the US, Norway, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Queensland, tables fitted to gauge readings in the UK and France, and modelled tides elsewhere. Wind, waves and water temperature work anywhere on the water.

Where does the data come from?

The Canadian Hydrographic Service, NOAA, Kartverket, Rijkswaterstaat, LINZ, the Marine Institute and other national agencies for tides; Environment Canada, the US National Weather Service and MET Norway for wind, waves and warnings. Sources and terms.

What do you keep about my requests?

Counts of which tools are used, for rate limits and to see what's useful. No account, no names; the places you ask about aren't tied to you.
